The Classroom Rainforest

Rainforests create their own wet climates through transpiration, condensation, and precipitation.

How to build a mini rain forest.

Materials

  • 2 litre plastic drink bottles
  • Stones or gravel
  • Potting soil
  • Plant Cuttings
  • Plastic bags and bag ties

Procedure

  1. Place a layer of stones on the bottom half of the plastic drink bottle.
  2. Add a two to three inch layer of potting soil on top of the rocks.
  3. Plant a few plant cuttings making sure all roots are covered.
  4. Water the plants until the soil is moist.
  5. Cover one of their plant cuttings, from the base to the top, with a plastic bag. Use a bag tie to secure the bag at the stem.
  6. Place the bottles in a warm, sunlit area.
  7. After several hours, make observations about the plants in bottles.

Analysis

Explain the differences observed in relation to transpiration, condensation, and precipitation.

Leaf Sketching

Find some leaves to sketch in your school or home yard

Become familiar with leaf details ie. structure and color before you send questions to the e-mail list about the structure and colour of leaves in rainforests.

The Camouflage Game

Resources

  • Rainforest area
  • Paper & coloured pencils
Preparation

  • Investigate how insects hide themselves from predators in the rainforest.
  • Form small teams & assign trail section to teams.
  • Make a rainforest insect out of paper and colour it using camouflage techniques.
Activity

  • Hide the paper insect on the trail for the 'predators to find'.
  • Predators times can be monitored and examined regarding the effectiveness of the camouflage technique.
