Virtual Field Trips

Action-Research Tours

Invite remote students along on your next on the ground field trip. Your students can enhance their understanding of the area by explaining their findings to others who are studying the environment remotely.

Here is an idea for some pre-field trip activities using the web

http://www.vienwoodss.qld.edu.au/irc_resmoreton.htm

You could the activities as part of an unit on beach environments then contact the teacher of the class who has actually taken students there to talk to their students about the environment

Try this subject sampler camping near the Barrier Reef in Queensland

Do the activities and send an e-mail to the Virtual Field trip teachers or oz-teachers e-mail list to locate a school in the area who could give you some expert advice from local students

Try other schools

Work on the Great Barrier Reef webquest and use the Virtual Field trip teachers or oz-teachers e-mail lists to find a school in the local area that provide  some local knowledge and perspectives.

Starting a unit of work on rainforests. Visit http://www.schools.ash.org.au/mooloolah/default.html to see what students can do in building a rainforest. You could contact them to provide some experienced information on rainforests for your class.

Another schools to try

Want to take your students on a tour of the nation’s capital. Check out this site. Through contacting this school you will be able to find local student experts to tell your students all about it.

Share an information problem with remote students for them to solve collaboratively via e-mail.

eg. An example such as Tackling Graffiti on community property could result in photos being exchanges, opinions, action plans etc as students consider essential questions such as

What is the problem?

Where is it a problem?

How and why is it done?

What are the consequences?

What is being done to resolve the issue and what could be done?
