This is a wonderful book and I am very much looking forward to Rapping with you. By now you should have started reading 'Someone Like Me' by Elaine Forrestal and also sent an introduction for your class to: someone-99@rite.ed.qut.edu.au Don't worry if you haven't done so yet, but please try to send an introduction this week. If you have finished reading the book, please don't reveal any of the surprises that might be in store for those that haven't. When you send your reply to Rap Point 1, please make the subject of your message something like: Response to Rap Point 1 by ... School Here is Rap Point 1: Elaine Forrestal has done a fantastic job developing the characters of this book. Whilst reading the book you can get to know Tas very well and even relate to many of the problems he has. In this Rap Point I would like us to concentrate on the relationships between some of the characters. So far, you should have met: Thomas Alexander St John Kennedy Dreadlock Enya Old Mac Tas' sisters Pip and Cheri and his Mum and Dad Granny Anne Reebock the Runner and others. Following are 5 choices for you to respond to. (Your class may respond to one, or assign the choices to different groups and respond to them all.) **Choice 1** Enya is the new girl in school. She makes quite an impact on the class. What is unusual about her? Why does she attract Tas' interest? Read page 18 and the and the first two paragraphs of page 19 and comment on the way the two characters react to one another. **Choice 2** Tas and Dreadlock have an interesting relationship that involves rivalry and bullying. Read page 39 from 'When I get to school...' through to page 40. Put yourself in Tas' place. How would you handle this situation? **Choice 3** Pip and Chari get very frustrated with their younger brother Tas. At other times they seem quite protective of him. Read from the bottom of page 11 'On my way back...' through to page 13. Discuss Chari's problem with travelling with Tas on the bus. ** Choice 4** Read pages 10 and 11. In your group, share your experiences with pets. Survey your class to find out the most popular pet. Discuss possible reasons for this animal's popularity. **Choice 5** Read page 47 through to the first half of page 49. Tas is in trouble for fighting with Dreadlock. How do you think Old Mac feels during the interview with Tas' parents? How much control does Tas' have in this situation? Explore and explain Tas' feelings. I think that I have provided plenty for you to work on. I hope these Choices get lots of discussion occurring. Here are some of the ideas we came up with: Run away and stay away. Go to the fight and Dreadlock won't fight because Dreadlock is sort of his friend. Go to the fight and fight Dreadlock. Use the watergun. Fill watergun with capsicum spray. Compromise with Dreadlock With the sentence where Dreadlock said "ready for anything you dish out" we came up with this idea that if Tas dishes out nothing Dreadlock won't dish out anything. Let Enya fight. (If Enya did fight Dreadlock wouldn't fight Enya and Tas would get away.) Ignore Dreadlock. We think the best idea would be to compromise with Dreadlock. We decided to respond to Choice 5 Mr Mac obviously feels sorry for Tas and thinks that he is wasting his talents. Mr Mac is aware that Tas has alot of potential and that he is sometimes led into trouble by Dreadlock. Mr Mac is worried by the fact that Tas can't seem to find any other way of solving his problems. He feels disturbed that Tas just doesn't seem to be able to fit in. He is in a difficult situation because he cannot let Tas continue to cause problems in his school. Tas has very little control during the interview, because it is really between Mr Mac and his parents, and they do all the talking. He has no say, it is more their choice than his. He is not really included in the discussion. Tas feels light headed, he says he feels his insides dropping like a lift. He is happy living at home and going to Mr Mac's school and he doesn't want any change. He is very worried about being sent to is a Special School. Tas does not think it is his fault he thinks Dreadlock causes the fights. Tas has a dilemma here - he wants to tell about what they have found - but Enya made him promise not to tell anyone. How would you deal with this situation? --Choice 3-- Mr Mac's heart attack... (Read pages 78-80) Tas sets up Dreadlock's library folder. Once Mr Mac decides to check all the folders there doesn't seem to be a way out. Write one for Tas... --Choice 4-- Mr Mac and Tas' new relationship... (Read pages 94-102) After the shooting, Tas ends up in hospital and discovers Mr Mac is still alive. Explain the new relationship that is developing between the two. --Choice 5-- Living in the city... (Read pages 101-102) Mr Mac quotes a famous author - Alvin Toffler, when he seeks to explain Tas' fear of moving to the city to attend a special school. Do you agree with Mr Mac's explanation? There are a set of resources made by a company called HBJ (Harcourt Brace? Jovacovich) that focus on examples of Reports. They are good - I couldn't find them in our library so check out yours. I can't really think of anything else that might help. You were on the right track anyway I thought you can't really do much in 250 words when you really think about it. Can you answer my question about the Daddy Longlegs spider? Ask your kids - Is the Daddy LOnglegs really a spider? It is a good brainteaser. We had to answer questions to Rap Point 2 - Choice 2. It was about Tas and Enya finding the ammunition and explosives. The first question we had to answer was: Why Enya wants to keep the findings a secret ? The answers we came up with were: 1. Enya knows who hid the explosives. 2. Enya doesn't want to be overheard as the owner might chase and murder them. The other question we had to answer was: To put ourselves in Tas's position and Think about what we would do in Tas's position. The answers we came up with were: Jono and Aadon: We wouldn't tell anyone because Enya is our best friend and we wouldn't want to betray her trust. Ben and Luke: We would tell our fathers. Drew: Would tell because someone could get killed. Sam:Would tell proper authorites. From the coolest group in 7A, THE MACKDADDIES P.S. Hi to Mt Crosby State School!! We meet every Monday lunchtime. Our teacher brings in a special treat like lemonade. We did a survey and found out that cats, dogs and fish are the most popular pets. We reckon this is for the following reasons: Dogs - they are like a poart of the family and they really love you. cats - they are good to cuddle fish - they are easy to look after. We reckon that it was good that Tas had a dog rather than some other sort of pet because a cat wouldn't listen to him or guard him and the chooks so well. Next week I shall post the Rap Rap Wrap Up and also a survey for teachers to complete (I hope you don't mind). This Rap Point is in two parts and I would like you to respond to both parts. Don't worry if it takes you two weeks to do this - you may even respond in separate emails. I would love to see you responding to other class' emails over the next two weeks too. Here is Rap Point 3... By now you will have read the ending of the book Someone Like Me. (I will now be very careful about the way I write the rest of this - just in case some of you are not quite at the end of the book.) PART ONE: In the second half of the book there are a number of events that Tas has to deal with. Some examples are: - Tas finds out that it was Enya who shot him and he confronts her on the bus. - The orchestra comes to school and Tas discovers a talent. - Tas prepares for his audition for the School of Music. - Reebock the Runner dies. Tas has initial reactions to each of these events. He experiences a range of feelings. He also reflects on them and deals with them. Choose one of these events and write about Tas' reactions and feelings. Reflect on his character, how he deals with these events, and how they change him. Compare how other characters may have dealt with similar events. (Eg. Enya, Dreadlock, Chari etc.) PART TWO: Elaine Forrestal reveals Tas' disability in the very last few sentences. What were your initial reactions to the revelation? How did you feel about it after some thinking time? Tas' disability wasn't mentioned during the story. However, there are various clues throughout. Compile a list of these clues and discuss their significance. What was the purpose of the book being written this way? Why did Elaine Forrestal choose not to reveal Tas' disability till the end? We do not have any other suspects. I (Cameron), think the way to catch the thief is to stay up all night, and hide around the chicken pen and set up trip wires around the pen doors. So when you see him go in, shine a torch on him so he runs and trips over the trip wire. Then go grab him and yell for Reebok to get him. Clinton thinks that they should leave Reebok in the pen and set up a wire so if anyone falls over it, it slams the door shut. That means that the thief is still inside with Reebok and Reebok will go and bite him until Tas gets there. Sean thinks that they should paint a brick wall to look like the rest of the yard and chase him into it. When he hits it there is a motion sensor that calls the police. Ryan would catch the thief by making a very! deep hole and cover it with sticks and leaves and put mud or dirt on the top and come out in the morning and there's ya thief. From the howdy doody guys. We decided to answer 3 of the choices. Choice 1 The guy, who we think keeps stealing the chickens, is the guy who hides out in the bush. Choice 2 The reason Enya wants the box to be a secret is because she has seen box like this in Ireland, where a war is and she says that they've got bullets in them. Our group thinks that he should tell Reebook because he can't talk. Choice 3 A way that Tas could stop Mr Mac from checking the library folders is that he could say that some other students and himself need help with something else that is more important than checking the library folders. She's good all the time but gives as good as she takes and so Tas sees her as an eqaul to her in the end. Choice Two The girls in our group said they'd like to try to talk to Dreadlock if they were Tas instead of fighting him, or even to ignore him totally. The boys in our group said they would try to fight because they would always be looking over their shoulders, if they were Tas and chose not to fight to sort it out. Choice Three Chari thought it was embarrassing having an imbecile little brother on the bus with her and she thinks that it is unfair to have to go on the bus with him. She is olser than him so that's probably why she gets embarrassed Choice Four Dogs were the most popular in our class reading group probably because if you treat them properly they will be faithful to you. Dogs have uses to people too eg. guard dogs, guide dogs, working dogs and sporting dogs. Choice Five Old Mac feels disappointed in Tas because he can't do much more for him but he can't keep letting him behave the ay he is behaving because it disrupts everyone. Tas was feeling ashamed and unhappy and he also feels he has no control over the situation because his parents are discussing him with Old Mac without asking Tas what he thinks. Choice 3 Our group decided that confessing would be the best way out for Tas Choice 4 MR Mac and Tas were always friends but when Tas and Mr Mac were in hospital their friendship was strengthened because they spent so much time together talking. Tha talking helped them to understand each other. Tas felt sorry for waht he had done. Choice 5 Tas doesn't want to go to the city because of all the noise and there are too many people. Also he might get homesick for his parents and Enya. Mr Mac thinks the move would be good for Tas so he gets used to change and he could get away from Dreadlock. We have all read Someone Like Me and enjoyed it very much. What is your favourite part of the book? Our favourite part was getting to know Tas as a character. At the beginning when he made the two puppets act silly together on page 20. I liked how the story became more serious. Tas acted the fool but as he grew up and had more things happen to him, he became a more interesting person. We'd love to rap with you about this. Yay!!!! I wish you all the very best for your Easter break. May it be safe and that you enjoy your time with your families. We haven't had any responses yet to Rap Point 3. I guess there must be lots going on with the end of term coming soon. Despite this I am now sending a Rap Rap Wrap Up message. Even so, if you still wish to repond to Rap Points please do. I am very interested to see your responses and find out how you felt about the end of this wonderful book. As part of Rap Point 3 I asked you to compile a list of clues to Tas' disability mentioned during the story and to discuss their significance. Some of the things I had in mind were: On page 10 an incident is described where Tas, as a little boy, was standing in a paddock about to be charged by a bull when Reebok saved him. The description of the incident finishes with, 'All the doctors said I was lucky to be alive. That was the good news.' Why did the author finish this description in this way? What was the bad news? Is this the incident that led to Tas being blind? On page 32 Tas and Enya find the rope swing. Tas thinks, 'I'm used to people telling me not to do things...' The description of how Enya helps Tas onto the swing and how Tas lands on his bottom also give a clue. On page 35, when they discover the ammunition and explosives, Tas realises very quickly that it smells like fertiliser. People who lose one of their sense usually find that other senses become more acute. On pages 48 and 49 the Special School is first mentioned. Is this when we first find out that Tas is regarded as a 'Special Student'? On pages 50 and 51 Tas' hiding place is described. Here, and in other places in the book it is described as being under the house, and quite cramped. I imagine it to be quite dark. Tas doesn't seem to mind at all. It goes on to page 52 where Tas' thinks, 'From here in the hide-out I can hear the phone ringing, the chairs scraping, the people talking. I've got good hearing...' It's interesting to note that there are many instances in the book which seem designed to show Tas in situations that you mightn't think a blind person could possible be in. Hence, the surprise at the end! You might like to comment on these points as a Wrap Up message. I hope you have all enjoyed this Book Rap and continue to participate in other Book Rap Projects in the future. There are several Book Raps on the calendar for Term 2. I am conducting two of these. If you don't know where that is, it's in Brisbane. We are doing Rap Point 3. Our task was to explain how Tas reacted to Reebok's death. Tas experienced various emotional reactions to Reebok's death. He was emotionally attached to the dog, and when he died, Tas was extremely upset, sad and wanted revenge at the killer. Even when Reebok was dead, Tas wanted to stay by his side. He dealt with the unexpected death of his beloved dog by concentrating on the audition of the orchestra and getting on with his life. Also, he strived to do better in his schoolwork and earn the music scholarship. The death made him more independent and he realised that nothing can ever stay the way it is. Later on, he realised that changes are good. We think we would be heart-broken, shocked, and bawling our eyes out. He got over it and was happy that Reebok was in doggy heaven. But, he wished he was there for the good moments. We have thought about how Dreadlock would have reacted if his dog had died. a) We think Dreadlock wouldn't have cared if his dog died b) We think that he has a soft spot on the inside, but he doesn't show it on the outside. We also thought about how Enya would have reacted. a) We think that she would have felt the same, because she also used to have a dog. That's all for now, See ya next time.
