But it feels like I left part of my life behind. It's fun in a way because I'm exploring and discovering new things. And new places to visit. Hopefully in time I would make new friends, but I miss the ones I left behind. It's hard adapting to the new ways of life here, different people, different lifestyle. It's too far away from my previous house. I feel as if my whole life upto now has been deleted. I hope i grow to like and appreciate the people here but my first impressions aren't all that good. I miss my home. The advice I give to Nathanial is don't be closed up, be open minded, and accept the change and make the most of it. Try to relate to the new people, find the things you have in common with them, mine was Footy and Cricket! Be positive and let their first impressions of you be wonderful. If you appeal to be a sad and depressed person no one would want to have very much to do with you. Where as if you are happy and positive you'll make new friends fast and fit in,in no time at all! PAUL - I was too young to remember when I moved, so I cannot relate to Nathanial's position. But I believe it would be very tough trying to make new friends at a new school. With our parents, we don't tell them much about what we do, and that makes the relationship somewhat distant. Dinner time is the only time you socialize with them. I guess thats it on that topic. Nathanial's mum seems to be more at fault because she knew that Nathanial was at the stage when he would start wondering about his father and questions would need to be answered. But she tried to push that time further and further away, but she was only putting off the inevitable. Nathanial seemed stubborn about it, not thinking htat maybe his mother was right about some things, and seemed to just wallow in his own self pity. Nathanial's mum just needs to consider that Nathanial is growing up and that she can't sheild him from the past forever. Nathanial needs to see that his mother is older and knows what she's doing. In the past, when you moved school/house/city/country, describe how you felt. Jeff - I've never moved school, house, city OR country, except for the change from primary school to high school. It wasn't that hard, except for the first couple of weeks when I was a bit overwhelmed with the homework - it wasnt that I couldn't do it, but because there was a lot more than in primary school it seemed like it would take forever. When I actually got started it didn't even take ten minutes - it just seemed like alot. Eventually I learnt that all I have to do it just sit down and DO what I have to do to get it done. Stefan - I've never moved school, just like Jeff. I haven't even moved house, just like Jeff. But (obviously) I moved into the same class as him in high school, I found it hard to settle in because i had to make new friends. I found the homework to be a handful at first, and then I realised it just seemed like alot, just like jeff, but I eventually settled in and got comfortable with my souroundings. 2. Based on your own experience, what advice would you give Nathanial to help smooth his transition to a new school and new town? I know that it is not the way I should handle a situation like this (I wouldn't in real life, honest), but after all the grief he is caused people, I feel he should be scared out of his pants once in his life. It's alright I guess, but it's just too weird to read, like it is so fake. I think that we should get books that are relevant to our age group: a book about perhaps teenage dramas and romance, issues that us teens have to deal with every day, something we can realte to. In the Gathering, sure there is somethings that we can relate to, but all in all, it is pretty fake happenings that go on in the book. Nah, I don't really like it as a set novel. It'd be good to read leisurely, but to do a whole term on issues that are pretty fake is a bit boring...weird. Well, I guess it is just my opinion. umm.... okay.. I totally disagree with you Grace! Sorry, no offence.. It is a good book and it's like a great opportunity to read it as a school book. Well, I thought Tomorrow When the War Began was good too... Should this novel be a set text for the year 9 students of 2003 at your school? Yes, it is an appropriate book to be set for year 9 students, because it has many aspects that can be discussed and analysed by the students. BUT- if I could personally choose the books to set, The Gathering wouldn't be one of them. There are plenty of other good books out there that are better than The Gathering. 2. What reasons would you give for recommending or rejecting this as a year 9 set text? I never got involved in this story. There wasn't really anything too far from the standard concept of "good and evil" to make the book stand out. The idea of corrupting children has also been used before, and every concept in the book was a cliché, from the "healing the earth that sorrows" to "binding the darkness". I'd MUCH rather set one of Isobelle Carmody's better books, like Obernewton, or other books in that series. At times there are clashes of interest, but we end up resolving the matter fairly well no matter what happens. Nathanial's mother refuses to understand or believe the position Nathanial is in, but his story does sound crazy, and I would have a hard time believing it if I was his mother, err... father. Nathanial is also at fault for supplying no proof of these events to his mother. In order to improve his unsteady relationship, he must spend more time with his mother and less time with the Chain, just as the mother should spend more time with Nathanial. The mother needs to take Nathanial on day trips, and let him know that she really cares for him more than he thinks, and they can get through the death of their father/husband together, and not alone. The helpful grandmother will need to step in and help out aswell to help make peace between mother and son. STEPHANIE - My Mum - The relationship that my mum and I share is not too strong at all, she loves reading, knitting, sewing, all the old lady stuff. She and i get on each other's nerves quite often, she has a controll problem, she contolls everyone with every smither of opportunity she has. I love her and all but she spends far too much time at work (she's a lecturer of physics and astronomy at Monash Uni)a very intellectual woman, i like to think in some ways i take after her good aspects, which there are many off! She's just VERY strict and i'm not aloud to do practically anything. It's mainly because I'm a girl. My dad - The relationship of which my dad and I share is priceless. We both live for footy and cricket, by the way GO THE MIGHTY SAINTERS! We have an oval at the back of our house and dad and I often go there, no.1 To escape the stress and tension of which my mum causes upon us, no.2 To kick the footy around and just rock on! I'm daddy's little girl and he has trouble exepting that I'm growing up and have different needs and interests. It was only a couple of days ago that he said to me "There's not place for a boy in my daughter's life, I'm the only man in her life" I didn't know how to take it. Take it as a compliment or be scared that he'll have trouble letting me go. Which no doubt he will. I know he'll suffer deeply when the time comes for me to move on with my life! He is a psychologist, and by choice, I would like to follow in his footsteps. He is my hero and the more I'm like him the more blessed and lucky I am aside from his NOSE! HEHEHE... Nathanial's mother is to blame due to the her not explaning things to Nathanial. He is a insecure, unsure person because of his mother. I understand why she doesn't believe his stories, i mean who would? She was probably just thinking that it was some excuse for his coming home very late. But you should give your child the benerfit of the doubt. She's the adult, she should have supported him. She needed to be more clear with him. He is also to blame, hiding thhings from his mother, not being 100% honest with her, but which teenager is? For advice, I suggest tell her everything straight out, be clear with her. Because if and when she finds out what you've gotten upto she'll be much more upset. But then on the other hand, some things are just not meant to be told to parents! Just try to spoil her a little bit more, spend more quality time together, compliment her. Be sweeter to her and you'll notice that if you keep it up, you'll win her over! I mean there's no disadvantage in your mother's love for you, except the occasional embarassment! For my second dose of advice, I suggest try to build up a trusting relationship with your son. If you show more trust for him then he'll show it back. I don't believe that he's the type of person to take advantage of your trust. Just try to be open minded, he needs you, and he especially needs your support! If you really want this relationship to work you've got to tell him EVERYTHING! and then you'll be able to start all over again without any dark secrets standing in the way! Honesty is the key!
